    For most vehicle owners, a vehicle is an essential companion for daily commuting or production operations. The vehicle nameplate affixed inside the cab or engine compartment is like the "ID card" of this "companion," carrying the core identity information of the vehicle. Many owners only focus on fuel consumption and vehicle condition in daily use but overlook the importance of this small nameplate. Today, we will comprehensively popularize knowledge about Chinese vehicle nameplates, helping you understand the key information behind them.

    图片1

    I. What is a Vehicle Nameplate?

    A vehicle nameplate is a permanent label produced by the vehicle manufacturer, indicating the core characteristics of the vehicle. It is usually made of metal or wear-resistant plastic. It is not a randomly attached mark—vehicles in every country must be manufactured in strict accordance with their own national standards. The information on it is reviewed and filed by the manufacturer, holding legal effect and serving as an important certificate for the legality of the vehicle's identity. Whether it is new vehicle registration, annual inspection, used car transactions, or insurance claims, this small nameplate plays an irreplaceable role. It is worth noting that modified vehicles should have both the post-modification complete vehicle product nameplate and the pre-modification complete vehicle (or chassis) product nameplate, and the information on the nameplates must be completely consistent with the vehicle announcement information.

    II. Core Functions of a Vehicle Nameplate

    1. Legal Basis for Identity Authentication: The information on the nameplate is completely consistent with the Announcement of Vehicle Manufacturers and Products and the motor vehicle conformity certificate. It is a core certificate for traffic management departments to confirm the legality of the vehicle. Vehicles without a nameplate or with nameplate information inconsistent with the filing cannot complete registration and annual inspection.

    2. Intuitive Query of Vehicle Information: Without flipping through thick manuals, you can quickly obtain key vehicle parameters such as gross vehicle mass, engine power, and manufacturing date through the nameplate, facilitating owners to query compatible parts during daily maintenance and repairs.

    3. Important Reference for Transactions and Claims: In used car transactions, information such as the manufacturing date and model on the nameplate is an important basis for judging the depreciation degree of the vehicle. In insurance claims, the nameplate information helps insurance companies quickly confirm the vehicle model and configuration, avoiding claim disputes.

    4. Red Line Standard for Modification and Compliance: Vehicle modifications must strictly follow the rated parameters on the nameplate (such as gross vehicle mass and load capacity). Modifications beyond the scope indicated on the nameplate are illegal operations, which will result in penalties and failure to pass the annual inspection.

    5. Intuitive Reflection of Standard Compliance: The fixing method, location, form, and label performance (tamper-proof, anti-counterfeiting, etc.) of the nameplate all comply with national standards, serving as direct proof of the vehicle's compliant production.

    III. Core Composition of a Vehicle Nameplate

    The information composition of a vehicle nameplate is clear and standardized. Among them, the vehicle model and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are the two core parts, containing the key "genetic code" of the vehicle.

    (I) Vehicle Model: Understand the Vehicle's "Identity Label"

    The compilation of vehicle models follows clear industry specifications. Currently, China uniformly adheres to the Rules for the Compilation of Automobile and Trailer Model Numbers formulated by the China Machinery Vehicle Technology Service Center, which applies to automobiles and trailers under the management of the Announcement of Vehicle Manufacturers and Commercial Vehicles.

    车辆型号

    A vehicle model consists of a set of Chinese Pinyin letters and Arabic numerals, including the manufacturer code, vehicle type code, main parameter code, and product serial number. For special-purpose vehicles and special-purpose trailers, an additional special-purpose vehicle classification code shall be added, and a manufacturer-defined code may be attached if necessary. To avoid confusion with numbers, the letters "I" and "0" shall not be used in compilation.

    Taking Foton Auman's model "BJ4259Y6DHL" as an example, the breakdown is as follows:

    1. Manufacturer Code (BJ): An exclusive code to identify the automobile manufacturer, represented by two or three Chinese Pinyin letters corresponding to the manufacturer's name. It is assigned by the Standardization Research Institute of China Automotive Technology and Research Center based on the enterprise's name and commercial vehicle business conditions, with different codes for different enterprises. Similarly, "CA" represents FAW Group, "EQ" represents Dongfeng Motor Corporation, "SCM" represents Shanghai General Motors Corporation, and "BH" represents Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, etc.

    2. Vehicle Type Code (4): Represented by a single Arabic numeral, indicating the vehicle type. The specific corresponding relations are as follows: 1 = Ordinary Truck, 2 = Off-road Vehicle, 3 = Ordinary Dump Truck, 4 = Tractor, 5 = Special-purpose Vehicle, 6 = Passenger Car, 7 = Sedan, 9 = Trailer. "4" indicates that this model is a tractor.

    3. Main Parameter Code (25): Represented by two Arabic numerals, indicating the core characteristics of the vehicle. The meaning of the main parameter code varies by vehicle type:

    1. For ordinary trucks, off-road vehicles, ordinary dump trucks, tractors, special-purpose vehicles, and trailers, the main parameter code represents the gross vehicle mass (unit: ton). If the gross vehicle mass exceeds 100 tons, three digits are allowed. If the main parameter has fewer digits than required, "0" shall be used for padding in front of the parameter.

    2. For passenger cars, the main parameter code × 0.1 indicates the total vehicle length (unit: meter).

    3. For sedans, the main parameter code × 0.1 indicates the engine displacement (unit: liter). In the example, "25" means the gross mass of the tractor is approximately 25 tons.

    4. Product Serial Number: Determined by the enterprise independently to distinguish vehicles with the same type code and main parameter code. It is represented by Arabic numerals, which are used sequentially as 0, 1, 2, 3...

    5. Special-purpose Vehicle Classification Code: Only required for special-purpose vehicles and special-purpose semi-trailers, used to identify the structural category and purpose of the special-purpose vehicle. For example, "GJB" represents concrete mixer trucks, "CCY" represents stake trucks, and "XLC" represents refrigerated trucks, etc.

    6. Manufacturer-defined Code (Y6DHL): A supplementary code independently specified by the enterprise as needed, which can be represented by Chinese Pinyin letters and Arabic numerals with a self-determined number of digits. For new energy vehicles, the manufacturer-defined codes are specified as follows:

    1. HE: Hybrid Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    2. SHEV: Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    3. PHEV: Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    4. CHEV: Power-split Hybrid Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    5. BEV/EV: Battery Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    6. PCEV: Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle/Chassis

    7. DMEV: Dimethyl Ether Vehicle/Chassis

    Analysis of other model examples:

    · Ordinary Truck: BJ1032V5JV5-01 represents an ordinary cargo vehicle produced by Foton Motor with a gross mass of approximately 3 tons. It is equipped with a TM2 series flat-head single-body, a four-cylinder gasoline engine meeting the National VI emission standard, and is a two-axle 4×2 vehicle with hydraulic braking.

    · Ordinary Dump Truck: BJ3248 represents an Auman brand dump truck with a gross mass of approximately 24 tons, and the last digit "8" is a self-assigned variant number by the manufacturer.

    · Passenger Car: ZK6128HQ represents a Yutong brand passenger car. The main parameter code "12" × 0.1 = 12 meters, meaning the total vehicle length is approximately 12 meters, and it is a high-end highway passenger car product.

    · Semi-trailer: ZJV9405CCYSZ represents a CIMC brand stake semi-trailer with a length of 11.5 meters, a load capacity of 34 tons, and 3 axles.

    · Sedan: CA7234AT2 represents a FAW Hongqi brand sedan. The main parameter code "23" × 0.1 = 2.3 liters, meaning the engine displacement is approximately 2.3 liters, and the last digit "4" and the trailing letters are self-assigned numbers by the manufacturer.

    (II) Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): The Vehicle's "Globally Unique ID Number"

    The VIN is a globally unique 17-character code (uppercase letters + numbers), complying with the national standard GB16735-2019 Road Vehicles - Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) (this standard refers to the international standard ISO3799:2009 and is proposed and managed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology). The letters "I", "O", and "Q" are prohibited due to easy confusion with numbers.

    It consists of three core parts, each character having a specific meaning:

    1. World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI, Positions 1-3)

    The first part of the VIN, pre-assigned by the authorized authority of the country or region where the vehicle manufacturer is located. It must comply with the provisions of GB16737-2019 Road Vehicles - World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), representing the vehicle's "place of birth" and manufacturer. For example, common WMIs for Chinese commercial vehicles include "LZG" (Shaanxi Automobile) and "LVA" (Foton). The first two letters usually correspond to the country/region, and the third letter represents the specific manufacturer.

    2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS, Positions 4-9)

    The second part of the VIN, consisting of six characters. If the vehicle manufacturer does not use one or more of these characters, the selected letters or numbers shall be used for padding in those positions:

    Positions 4-8: Defined by the manufacturer to describe the general characteristics of the vehicle, including vehicle type (passenger car, truck, etc.), structural characteristics (body type, drive type, number of axles, etc.), equipment characteristics (restraint system type, power system, transmission type, etc.), and technical parameters (mass, dimensions, number of seats, etc.).

    Position 9: Check digit, calculated in accordance with the method specified in Appendix A of GB16735, used to verify the authenticity of the VIN and prevent forgery.

    3. Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS, Positions 10-17): The third part of the VIN, consisting of eight characters:

    Position 10: Model year code, cycling every 30 years. The specific corresponding relations are as follows:

    Position 11: Assembly plant code, representing the vehicle's assembly plant.

    Positions 12-17: Production serial number, used to distinguish different vehicles from the same manufacturer, same model year, and same configuration. If the manufacturer's annual output of complete vehicles and/or incomplete vehicles is 1,000 or more, positions 12-17 directly represent the production sequence number. If the annual output is less than 1,000, positions 12-14 shall be combined with the WMI to jointly identify the manufacturer, and positions 15-17 shall be the production sequence number.

    (III) Other Key Information on the Nameplate

    In addition to the model and VIN, the nameplate also uniformly indicates the following information, with all item names having Chinese names, and the content being standardized, clear, durable, and easy to identify:

    · Basic Information: Brand, manufacturer, manufacturing date, country of manufacture;

    · Technical Parameters: Gross vehicle mass, curb weight, rated load capacity/passenger capacity, engine model and rated power, maximum net power (for example, the nameplate of Auman BJ4259SNFKB-AA indicates: curb weight 8805kg, maximum allowable towing mass 40000kg, maximum design static load of the fifth wheel 16065kg, engine model ISGe5-460, maximum net power 330KW, manufacturing date April 2017);

    IV. Marking Positions of Vehicle Nameplate and VIN on the Vehicle

    For easy query and to avoid wear, the installation positions of the vehicle nameplate and VIN are clearly specified by national standards:

    (I) Installation Positions of the Nameplate

    Usually fixed in the following easy-to-find and wear-resistant positions:

    1. Cab door pillar (the most common position, visible when opening the driver's or passenger's door);

    2. Longitudinal beam or firewall inside the engine compartment;

    3. Left side of the instrument panel or under the seat inside the cab.

    (II) Marking Requirements for VIN

    1. Each vehicle shall have a unique VIN, which shall be permanently marked on the vehicle. The composition and sequence of characters of all VINs on the same vehicle shall be the same. The marked VIN shall not be altered except as specified in Chapter 9 of GB16735-2019.

    2. The vehicle shall indicate the VIN on the product nameplate (except for L1 and L3 category vehicles). The form, marking position, and marking requirements of the product nameplate shall comply with the provisions of GB/T18411.

    3. The vehicle shall have at least one VIN directly engraved on the frame (for vehicles without a frame, it shall be the main load-bearing and non-detachable part of the body) in a position resistant to corrosion and wear:

    o For trucks with a maximum design gross mass of 12000kg or more and all drawbar trailers, the VIN shall be engraved on the outer side of the longitudinal beam at the front end of the longitudinal centerline of the right front wheel. If restricted by structure, it may also be engraved on the outer side of the longitudinal beam near the longitudinal centerline of the right front wheel.

    o For semi-trailers and center-axle trailers, the VIN shall be engraved on the outer side of the longitudinal beam at the front end of the right front landing gear (except for vehicles without longitudinal beams).

    V. Use and Protection of Nameplate and VIN

    1. Do not cover, alter, or damage the nameplate and VIN, otherwise it will affect vehicle annual inspection and transfer. In serious cases, it may be deemed illegal modification and subject to corresponding penalties.

    2. If the nameplate is accidentally lost or damaged, contact the vehicle manufacturer or authorized service station in a timely manner to apply for replacement with materials such as the motor vehicle conformity certificate and the owner's identification document. Do not make it yourself.

    3. If the marked VIN needs to be re-marked or altered, it must comply with the provisions of GB16735-2019 Road Vehicles - Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and unauthorized modification is strictly prohibited.

    4. During daily vehicle maintenance, pay attention to whether the nameplate is loose or worn, and whether the VIN engraved part is rusted. Handle problems in a timely manner to avoid troubles caused by blurred information.

    The small vehicle nameplate carries the vehicle's "identity code" and "technical file". From model compilation to VIN coding, every character and parameter complies with strict national standards. Understanding the model, VIN, and other information on the nameplate can not only help owners better understand their vehicles, accurately match parts, and conduct standardized maintenance but also avoid risks in scenarios such as registration, annual inspection, transactions, and claims. Next time you maintain your vehicle, take a moment to check this "ID card" and understand the professional information behind it, making vehicle use and maintenance more worry-free and compliant.
